Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com Now here's something you don't see everyday, Chauncey. It's the complete first season of one of television's smartest, savviest, and most subversively funny animated series, ranked by TV Guide as one of the top 50 series of all time. Like the animators at Warner Bros.' Termite Terrace (birthplace of Porky, Daffy, and Bugs), producer Jay Ward, his partner Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle), and the cracked writing staff did not write down to children. The dialogue is witty and sharply satiric. Characters break the "fourth wall" between the screen and the audience. They make sly references to the show's creators and the television network. They hurl barbs of mass destruction at Washington, D.C. politicians. And then there are the godawful puns. This four-disc set contains the series' first two serial adventures. "Jet Fuel Formula" is a cold war-era blast, as Rocky (voiced by June Foray, the Queen of Cartoons) and Bullwinkle frantically race to re-create a rocket fuel recipe (actually Grandma Bullwinkle's recipe for mooseberry fudge cake), while being menaced by those no-goodniks Boris Badenov and femme fatale Natasha. "Box Top Robbery" reveals that the basis for the world's economy is not gold and silver, but cereal box tops. Linking these cliffhanging episodes are such hilarious segments as "Fractured Fairy Tales," which upend familiar storybook favorites (Red Riding Hood, for example, is a predatory fur merchant after the unwitting wolf), "Mr. Peabody," the canine genius who travels through time in the company of his boy, Sherman, and forthright Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, who must contend with his own horse for the affections of sweet Nell. Bullwinkle gets extra credits as Mr. Know-It-All and as the host of Poetry Corner. And watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat! These cartoons are as fresh and funny as when they first aired more than four decades ago. Boomer-era adults will be amazed at the jokes that no doubt soared over their heads as children. --Donald Liebenson

Bullwinkle April 10, 2010 T.D. George (Seattle, WA USA) Rocky and Bullwinkle are as great as every. While watching, you'll notice a smile has crept onto your face. The humor is as corny as it was in the 60's and targeted more at adults than kids--but it is still remarkably funny. They could have done a better job on the DVD's in balancing the sound among the several segments of each show. Watching it now it appears that the writers and cast must have had a great time creating each segment.
Double entendre is guaranteed to strike your funny bone April 3, 2010 bernie (Arlington, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I grew up on these presentations and am still growing up on them. They are no more children's stories as "Alice in Wonderland" is. What child knows of the Ruby Yacht of Omar Khayyam? Or Apple Pandowdy. Many other references' are over ones head as a child but still just as much fun to watch.
The show follows a simple formula that starts with a series of cliffhangers starring Rocky and Bullwinkle. You are required not to miss any of the installments to keep track of what is going on. Next in the formula, "Fractured Fairy Tales" I am afraid that this is where I acquired my classical background. Many of the fairy tales have alternate endings. The narrator of the tales is Edward Everett Horton (Mr. Witherspoon in "Arsenic and Old Lace.") then we come to "Bullwinkle's Poetry Corner" or "Mr. Know-it-All" where he meets with many slapstick situations. Again, this is where I picked up my poetic background. Then there is the hat trick (wrong hat), "Peabody's Improbable Histories", "Dudley Do-Right", or "Aesop's and Son." Wrapped all up in 22 minutes with a concluding cliffhanger.
There are more characters in the shows than I can mention in the review but they add to the viewers' enjoyment yet Gidney and Cloyd come to mind.
The absolute best March 27, 2010 W. Hohauser (NYC) It's hard to beat Rocky and Bullwinkle and to have the episodes collected in one place is a gift. Pure joy. Nobody writes cartoons like this anymore. A terrible budget meant nothing to the people who made these.
The cons with this collection is that the supporting cartoons are way out of order in terms of original air date but only the Rocky and Bullwinkle episodes are in chronological order so it's not a great loss in terms of entertainment. The opening animations are crudely altered which is strange and gets annoying because they are repeated with every episode. It would have been nice to have one example of the original "Rocky and His Friends" opening but perhaps it was so integrated with the original sponsor, General Mills, that a decision was made to not use it.
I'm sorry that seasons 4 and 5 seems to be not forthcoming but since all the supporting cartoons in those seasons were either repeats from seasons one thru three or cartoons from other producers, the producers of these DVD sets might be at a loss at how to package the last seasons.
Nice Touch March 6, 2010 H. M. knox (California) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently placed an order with Amazon. The order arrived in a timly fashion. The nice touch is: it was nicely wrapped and in excellent condition, a ribbon gave it a personal touch. Says a lot about the seller. I would buy more and refer my friends to look for this seller in the future.
boyfriend purchase October 30, 2009 libradiva (akron, ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased all three for my boyfriend because he LOVES rocky & bullwinkle. He loves it and watches it at least 2-3 times a month. In watching it with him (every now and then of course) it takes us back and makes us laugh. Enjoy folks!
