Product Description Follows the lives of a high school football coach, his family, and his players in a small Texas town that lives for the Friday night football game.
Amazon.com Some televised dramas focus on families, others on singles and couples, but NBC's Friday Night Lights, among the finest shows of the decade, takes on an entire town. As with Sports Night, minimal enthusiasm for athletics presents no hindrance to enjoyment, just an interest in the concerns of Dillon, TX's populace, indelibly captured through authentic locations, handheld cameras, and naturalistic acting. If the off-shoot of creator Peter Berg's feature film doesn't look like most primetime programs, the cinematic score from Austin's Explosions in the Sky contributes to the big-screen impression. Since the first season, Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), now Dillon High principal, remain constants as they guide their charges--including 17-year-old daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden)--through games, classes, and beyond. Where Jason Street and Smash Williams began as major players, they fade from view in the third as they figure out their post-grad futures. Instead, big-hearted garage-rocker Landry (Observe and Report's Jesse Plemons) emerges as the heart of the show, while his best friend, Matt (Zach Gilford), reaches out to his estranged mother, Shelby (Kim Dickens), for help when his grandmother’s deteriorating mental condition becomes too much to bear. If everyone has financial struggles of some kind, new quarterback JD. McCoy (Jeremy Sumpter) shares no such concerns. By the end of the season, however, his controlling father, Joe (D.W. Moffett), will go too far. And after a misguided move into criminal intrigue during the second year, Lights avoids any similar missteps this time around, and the entire cast rises to the occasion, including Taylor Kitsch (Riggins), Minka Kelly (Lyla), and Adrianne Palicki (Tyra), who portrays the show's trickiest character, a self-obsessed senior who takes advantage of Landry whenever it suits her needs. Extras include deleted scenes and insightful commentary from writer/producer Jason Katims. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Very good but too few extras September 1, 2010 Bronx Book Guy Though I liked the First Season better, the Third Season of this show continued to shine -- as noted by someone else, the characters are the core reason I really like this show. It's so easy to feel and fall in love with the characters -- Tami, Tyra and Matt probably are my favorites -- and let's remember it takes not only good acting but good writing and directing (and camera work!) to succeed. Liking Matt, I was no big fan of the freshman QB, but realistically, it was a good story line and it was nice to see who played the mom (I remember her from Northern Exposure). And, Kim Dickens does well as Matt's long missing mom. Several special scenes, including Tami talking with Julie about sex, a scene well praised by commentary at the time.
One thing that probably warrants a star off -- for the DVD at least -- is the paucity of extras. Now, the price is great. That's for sure. But, I saw the second season on DVD (after seeing the first on Netflix) and it had three commentaries ("Tami/Julie" did one, "Landry/Tyra" another and producers or whomever) plus a Q&A appearance from most of the cast. And, some deleted scenes. Personally, this was a bit thin (only a few episodes had commentaries etc.), but appreciated.
This season has ONE commentary track and deleted scenes. The IMDB page alone has lots of behind the scene stuff. Fans really deserve a bit more in the extra department when they buy a DVD, especially given after the 1st season, each one had a relatively few number of episodes (15 or less). I see some appear to be upset about music changing or whatever, but that might be a matter of rights. Not having a few behind the scenes things is different, since again, IMDB has it online for free!
But, the show is great, and well worth watching. Buy or rent it!

Terrific show - great DVD August 7, 2010 Marcia L. Ferguson They say this is the "best show nobody watches" ... thank goodness it's finally being recognized with Emmy nominations. Buy this DVD without hesitation, and be prepared to be moved and entertained. It's a gem, as are the other seasons of Friday Night Lights.
